Day in the Life of

Emma

The morning light filtered through the kitchen window as Emma sat down at the table, her book box already waiting for her. At Alliance Charter Academy, her school day didn’t begin with a bell—it began with a plan she and her mom had created together.

“Let’s start with reading,” her mom said, sliding the All About Reading materials across the table.

Emma opened her lesson and began reviewing phonograms, carefully sounding out each one. Today’s lesson included a short story, and Emma read it out loud, growing more confident with each sentence. When she stumbled on a tricky word, she paused, broke it apart, and tried again.

“Nice job catching that,” her mom encouraged. “You’re really thinking like a reader.”

After finishing her reading lesson, Emma moved on to a quick writing activity, forming sentences using the words she had just learned. She liked seeing how everything connected—reading, spelling, and writing all working together.

By mid-morning, it was time to head to campus.

Her first stop was her Prelude Orchestra class. She carefully opened her violin case, lifting the instrument like it was something very special—because to her, it was.

The instructor led the group through warm-ups, and soon the room filled with the sounds of beginners learning together. Emma focused on her bow hold and finger placement, remembering what she had practiced at home.

“Keep your bow straight,” the teacher reminded gently.

Emma adjusted and tried again, smiling when the note came out clearer this time. She loved being part of the orchestra, even as she was still learning. It made her feel like a real musician.

Next, Emma walked with her mom to meet her Educational Specialist in person on campus. She liked these meetings—they felt important, like she was checking in on her goals.

“Hi, Emma! I’ve been looking forward to hearing about your week,” her ES said with a smile.

Emma opened her reading materials first. “I’ve been working on bigger words using my phonograms. I can read my stories more smoothly now.”

Her ES nodded. “Let’s hear a little.”

Emma read a short passage out loud, carefully sounding out a longer word and then blending it together.

“That was excellent decoding,” her ES said. “You’re becoming a more confident reader.”

Then Emma pulled out her science notebook and flipped to her most recent entry. “Yesterday in science class, we checked our pea seeds. Mine was almost two inches tall, and the leaves were darker green than before.”

Her ES leaned in. “You’re doing a great job recording detailed observations. What do you think will happen next?”

“I think it will keep growing taller and maybe get more leaves,” Emma said.

“That’s a thoughtful prediction. You’re really thinking like a scientist,” her ES replied.

Emma left the meeting feeling proud and motivated, ready to keep learning.

Back at home, Emma relaxed and rested for a bit before packing up again—this time for swim lessons at the local pool. The sun sparkled on the water as Emma jumped in, ready to practice.

“Kick, kick, kick!” the instructor called out.

Emma focused on her form, stretching her arms and keeping her face in the water just like she had been taught. Each lap made her stronger and more confident.

By the time they returned home, Emma was tired but happy. She had read stories, played music, shared her learning, and practiced swimming—all in one day.

That evening, as she curled up on the couch, Emma thought about everything she had done.

At Alliance Charter Academy, her days were full, flexible, and uniquely hers—blending learning at home, hands-on experiences, and meaningful connections into something that felt just right.
